About Us 2017-10-12T02:26:32+00:00

WHY DO WE DJ?

Bottom line, we love music.  Yes, we can go overboard with our gear, and we probably have too much of it. But for all three of us, it’s how music makes us feel, and gets our body’s movin’.  You know when you hear a song that just moves you.  Your head starts boppin’, you start drumming your fingers, tapping your toes….all involuntarily.  And then when the next song just “fits” and a smile breaks across your face.  It’s that feeling.  That’s what we dig.

Yep, we were those geeks that used to figure out what songs would go best together and put them together on either a cassette tape or a CD.  All to get that great feeling.

We went from dancing in the clubs in the early 80’s to DJ’ing in the clubs in 1985, and then at weddings.  We’ve seen a bunch of changes in that time.  From big speakers, heavy amps and vinyl records, to smaller lightweight powered speakers and all digital music.

Music is such a part of who we are, we are branded by it.  Just ask Jeff to show you.  It just so happens that we have been mixing music professionally now, for over 30 years at weddings, and private parties. We love music!  And we would be thrilled to be the DJ at your event.

MEET OUR DISC JOCKEYS

Jeff Zahrt
Jeff ZahrtOwner / DJ
Jeff is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and is the owner and operator of Z-Music DJ’s. Jeff has been performing as a mobile Disc Jockey in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area since 1985. His background and experience is rooted in radio.
Jeff graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communications. It’s at UNI that he met Kirk Monson, another of our DJ’s.  He spent three years working at UNI’s student-run radio station, serving as morning DJ, program director and music director. Jeff’s mobile experience comes from doing numerous weddings, corporate parties, proms, homecomings, private parties, class reunions and club work. Jeff always has a rhythm in his head and is usually moving to a groove.
Jeff is married, and has four very active kids.  “Seems like at least one of them has an activity every week”.
“Making people dance and getting their body moving to beat is an absolute blast.  When they are smiling and dancing and sweat is running down their cheeks, I know they are having a great time.  It’s a fantastic feeling.”
Kirk Monson
Kirk MonsonDJ
Kirk Monson started DJ’ing in 1986 up in the Lake Okoboji area.  (and he’s been rockin’ it ever since).
Kirk and Jeff met in college at the University of Northern Iowa while both were studying for broadcasting degrees.  (they of course both graduated).  Kirk spent some time working at the student run radio station, as well as running his own DJ business while in College.
Kirk married his High School Sweetheart while still in college (ask him how he met his wife), and the two have been married ever since.  They have three girls who are very active.  As his girls got older, Kirk still wanted to DJ, but just didn’t have time to run his business.  So, he now DJ’s under the Z-Music Banner.  This allows him to spend time with his family, DJ, and not worry about running the business.
Kirk is also an accomplished Video Producer/Editor and has won numerous industry awards for his video work.
Paul Gormley
Paul GormleyDJ
Paul is originally from Amana, Ia. and presently lives in Marion. He started DJing in college in 1986 and started his own business in 1988. Paul Graduated from Iowa State University with both a BA in Electrical Engineering and an MBA. Paul has specialized in wedding events and high energy school dances since 1986, each requiring their own unique kind of production.
“When I am working with a client, I see it as a collaboration. I first try to understand their vision, and then I help them make it real. It may sound cliche, but each event I help create is not only special to the client, it is special to me.”
Paul uses a mixture of his love of music, an eye for group dynamics and technology to produce exactly the right mood for the moment at any event. He can take a room from a subdued and cool reception feel to the red hot energy of a beat-mixed video club. But only if that meets with the wishes of his clients and the needs of their guests.
Professional, yet fun and creative is how Paul is described often by his satisfied clients.
